Prize Draws

These prize draws have been set up to thank customers, without whom it would not be possible for me to continue to record life in remote Australia. Buyers are the only entrants in prize draws, for reasons of fairness that are explained at the very end of this page.

Regular Competitions

Prizes

Prizes are picked from the Prize Box. Prizes all relate to the Australian bush and include such things as books, CDs/DVDs, Waltzing Matilda music boxes, leather items from Packsaddle Leather, Hema 'Australia's Outback' maps and packets of Christmas cards and Australian stockman greeting cards.  Plus, copies of "A Million Acre Masterpiece" and "Life as an Australian Horseman".

Some of the books are by other authors.  These have usually been bought second-hand because they are no longer in print, i.e. no longer available new. Increasing rarity has actually made them more highly sought after, rather than less expensive to purchase, even though they are in used condition. The Prize Box books have all been purchased because they are especially interesting or well written, and I've come across them when looking for bush books for myself.

Some of the books in the prize box have also been personally signed by the authors.

Book Comments Prize Draw

Australia Day

These prizes are picked from the Prize Box. Prizes all relate to the Australian bush and include such things as books by other authors, CDs/DVDs, Waltzing Matilda music boxes, leather items from Packsaddle Leather, Hema 'Australia's Outback' maps and packets of Christmas cards and Australian stockman greeting cards.

Some of the books in the prize box have been bought second-hand because they are no longer in print, i.e. no longer available new. The Prize Box books have all been purchased because they are especially interesting or well written, and I've come across them when looking for bush books for myself.

Some of the books in the prize box have also been personally signed by the authors.

How do you enter?

  • This competition is open to all direct book purchasers who have current contact details on file. Customers enter this particular prize draw by emailing me a couple of sentences, approximately,** explaining their thoughts on the book 'A Million Acre Masterpiece' (after they have received the book).
  • ** Note that 'a couple of sentences' is only an approximation. Ultra-brief comments such as 'good' or 'nice', display no particular thought or effort on behalf of the writer and do not qualify the writer for entry in this prize draw. But there is no need to produce pages, either; just send your honest opinion in one or two thoughtful sentences or a paragraph. Please note, errors of spelling and grammar do not matter, it is the meaning of the words & sentiment behind them that is important.

Grapevine Prize Draw & Referrers Prize Draw

Australia Day every year

These draws are for special prizes out of the Prize Box as explained in the Book Comments Prize Draw above.

How do you enter?

  • Grapevine Prize Draw - When ordering online, simply advise how you found out about the website.
  • Referrers Prize Draw - If you found out about the website (books, cards or photographs) from someone else, and they are already recorded on my mailing list as having bought a book or photograph themselves and live in a different location, fill in their details and you both go into the Referrers Prize Draw as well.
(Please note; if the other person is not recorded on my mailing list as a buyer, or if the other person lives in the same dwelling as you, unfortunately the entry in this draw will be disqualified. This draw has been set up specifically to thank people who have bought books, cards or photographs and told other people, who then purchased themselves.)

Other Competitions — Office closure, comments from Aussie expats; and thank-you gifts

Gifts out of the Prize Box, as described above, are sent to people who have gone out of their way to be helpful. For example - some customers have recommended 'A Million Acre Masterpiece' and 'Life as an Australian Horseman' to many other people who have then purchased copies themselves; they have spent time explaining additions or corrections to words and expressions in other languages, for the 'Translations' pages; or they have taken the time to provide useful information on rural life in another country. Help such as this is very much appreciated.

These are not random prize draws, these are gifts sent direct to people who have been particularly helpful, throughout the year.

Other people have placed orders while the office has been closed, and waited patiently until their order could be sent upon my return home. If the office closure is longer than seven days, usually all those who ordered while the office was closed, will be entered into an extra prize draw.

Prize Draw Terms & Conditions

  • These competitions are open to everyone on the mailing list who has fulfilled the criteria specified and whose name and contact details are complete and current. If the winner cannot be contacted because their contact details are outdated or inaccurate then a replacement winner will be drawn within 7 days. This is because unfortunately I don’t have the administrative resources to track down people who have moved and not advised their altered contact details (in particular, postal address & email address). If your postal address and/or email address changes, let me know straight away - because if your newsletter is 'Returned to Sender' and I can't contact you by email, you can no longer be included in the prize draws.
  • Winners are contacted by email to confirm their delivery address details are correct. And if your mailing address becomes outdated, I will try to email you to ask for your current postal address. So if you get a new email address please remember to let me know.
  • The winner’s name, nearest town/suburb and country (if not Australia) will be added to the ‘Prize Draws’ section of the website, as has been done for the previous competition winners listed below. If any winner has any objection to these basic details being publicly recorded they can be exempted, and initials used instead, but the winner must let me know as soon as they have been notified that they have won.
  • In each prize draw, only one entry per postal address or per household/business will be accepted. This means that 'referrals' from people who live at the same address, are not eligible for the 'Referrals' prize draw.
  • Though most prize entries for most prize draws close on Australia Day, the actual drawing of winners usually takes place in February, because it can take considerable administration time to ensure the mailing list is sufficiently up-to-date. But please note that all orders received & dispatched are precisely dated - so orders received after Australia Day are only included in the following year's prize draws. Details of the prize draw winners are not usually added to the ‘Prize Draws’ section of the website until some weeks afterwards, when the next batch of website updates are processed. So there may be a delay of some weeks in-between when a competition has been drawn and the prize sent to the winner, and when the details appear publicly on the website. Prize draw winners are notified straight away, by email.

Buyers-only prize draws

Due to the influx of entrants via competition websites, who were only entering to win something for nothing rather than something they really valued, unfortunately all prize draws are now strictly buyers-only draws.

This is certainly not to ‘force’ people to spend money, it is simply to restrict prize draw entry to people who have a demonstrated interest in the bush - i.e. people who are most likely to genuinely enjoy what they may win.

It would seem very unfair for anyone to win something they’re not particularly interested in, just so they can re-sell it, when there are others who would be really delighted with the prize, and treasure it. Buyers-only draws also ensure I am thanking those who I ought to be thanking, people who have supported my recording of outback heritage, rather than verandah sitters or wallaby ticks. It clearly wouldn't be fair to include in prize draws those who had never spent a cent, thus watering down the chance of winning for genuine customers - many of whom have spent thousands of dollars.

Without buyers the reality is I would not be able to continue to take photographs, write for a living or run a website, and you would not be reading this.

So thanks again to all buyers, the reality is you are the ones who have made these prize draws possible and keep the wheels turning. You really are appreciated. Best of luck in the competitions.

And to those who are finding this website interesting, shake the spiders out of your pockets, if you haven't already done so.
