{"id":2049,"date":"2011-11-10T15:07:37","date_gmt":"2011-11-10T05:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fionalake.com.au\/blog\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2011-11-10T15:07:37","modified_gmt":"2011-11-10T05:07:37","slug":"agricultural-historical-accuracy-in-film-television-dramas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fionalake.com.au\/blog\/agricultural-historical-accuracy-in-film-television-dramas\/","title":{"rendered":"Agricultural historical accuracy in film &#038; television dramas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I discovered that I&#8217;m not the only one who notices agricultural\u00a0errors in film and television dramas.<\/p>\n<p>William Hayes of the Meat Trade News Daily is well placed to comment on livestock breeds in the south of England where he grew up.\u00a0 &#8216;You see these magnificent period dramas, with beautiful costumes and every detail\u00a0just right &#8211; but then you see friesian cattle.\u00a0 When I was a boy growing up you would only ever see Devon, South Devon and Shorthorn cattle.\u00a0 No black and white cattle.\u00a0 What a lot of people don&#8217;t realise is that there were only dual purpose cattle around then.\u00a0 Beautiful big Devon cattle that could eat all day and all night.\u00a0 There were no friesians in\u00a0Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset until the 1960s.&#8217;\u00a0 William went on to say that\u00a0friesian cattle would have been brought into the UK after the war (WWII) from the Netherlands, and friesians would have arrived in the south of England from Wales, during the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Producers of historical dramas would not contemplate trotting out the wrong model car, clothing fashions or technology &#8211; so it&#8217;d be nice if they&#8217;d put more effort into getting the livestock breeds accurate as well.\u00a0\u00a0If the precise breeds\u00a0can&#8217;t be found, at least film another breed of a similar colour and shape &#8211; at least stock\u00a0less conspicuous than the world&#8217;s most unmistakably patterned dairy cow.<\/p>\n<p>And, <em>please<\/em>, no more &#8216;voice overs&#8217; of mooing temperate-climate\u00a0cattle such as Herefords, when it is a tropical breed such as\u00a0Brahmans that we&#8217;re seeing on screen.\u00a0 This gaffe is akin to dubbing\u00a0Abba singing\u00a0over the top of KISS concert images, or squealing rubber car tyres on a sandy track.\u00a0 Sound is an integral part of the atmosphere.\u00a0 \u00a0And how hard can it be to whip the microphone out in front of a mob of brahmans, it&#8217;s not as if they&#8217;re especially quiet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I discovered that I&#8217;m not the only one who notices agricultural\u00a0errors in film and television dramas.
