{"id":2228,"date":"2012-02-06T10:04:09","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T00:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fionalake.com.au\/blog\/?p=2228"},"modified":"2012-02-06T10:09:50","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T00:09:50","slug":"australias-fine-wool-merino-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fionalake.com.au\/blog\/australias-fine-wool-merino-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s fine wool (Merino) industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine if a capital city newspaper ran a story on Toyota wheel drives and illustrated it with an image of a Mini Cooper S.\u00a0 Can you imagine the resulting \u00a0laughter, too?<\/p>\n<p>Apparently it&#8217;s fine to use any old stock\u00a0library\u00a0image when it comes to illustrating a story on agriculture, however.\u00a0\u00a0The Feb 4-5 2012 edition of Brisbane&#8217;s Courier Mail includes a Nigel Austin\u00a0article on the improving state of the Australian wool industry.\u00a0 Which is the Australian fine wool industry.\u00a0 Most Australians are hopefully aware that Australia\u00a0remains the world leader when it comes to fine wool production, and that this fine wool is produced by our\u00a0famous Merino sheep.\u00a0 So surely an image of Merino sheep would be in order, to illustrate a story on Merino fine wool?<\/p>\n<p>No, let&#8217;s use\u00a0an image of\u00a0 a\u00a0&#8216;carpet wool&#8217; breed such as\u00a0Border Leicesters (distinctly different even to the untrained eye, because of their prominent roman noses).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a gaffe on a par with\u00a0writing about\u00a0Maseratis and illustrating it with an image of a Mack roadtrain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are daily examples of such media slackness in our capital city newspapers.\u00a0 No wonder urban residents\u00a0are becoming increasingly uneducated about Australian food &amp; fibre production, when the images accompanying articles are so often misleadingly inaccurate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Australia was built on the sheep&#8217;s back&#8217; is true.\u00a0 Our unique Merino wool industry deserves more respect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine if a capital city newspaper ran a story on Toyota wheel drives and illustrated it with an image of a Mini Cooper S.\u00a0 Can you imagine the resulting \u00a0laughter, too?
