Animal rights organisations – why are there so many splinter groups?

Why are there so many animal rights organisation instead of just one or two large groups?  Just here in Australia we have the main national organisations:   Animals Australia, PETA, Animal Liberation, RSPCA,Voiceless and Act Now For Animals (ANFA).  There are dozens of local groups and hundreds in Europe and North America.   They’re pushing for a huge raft of things, from banning leather cricket balls to guide dogs.

Why isn’t there just one or two great big, organisations united in pursuit of their common belief in animal liberation?

The myriad of splinter groups says it all really – fanatics teetering on the brink can’t get along with one another.

The relative unity of Australia’s primary production industry is very obvious by comparison.
