Equitana was an amazing experience – meeting people during the day, and attending events at night. A highlight for me was seeing the ‘All Star Showcase’ on Thursday night, the Grand Prix Dressage on Saturday night and the show jumping final on the last day. Which a Queenslander won. One of the commentators remarked early on that it was good to see that the only two clear rounds were made by Victorian showjumpers. The fact that his comment was greeted with deathly silence illustrated that the majority of people attending Equitana were actually from outside Victoria, so they were not of course excited by the prospect of a Victorian rider winning!
These were must-see events which included Australia’s best riders in all sorts of disciplines and three Olympians – William Fox-Pitt, eventing, UK; Steffen Peters, dressage, Germany/USA; and Wendy Schaeffer, eventing, South Australia. However many people I spoke to were thrilled with the educational programmes, ‘schools’ and competitions which ran during the day – with the only complaint being that there was too much on to see (a good problem to have).
