Fancy wandering out the front of our Darwin Esplanade hotel to watch the sun setting over Darwin harbour? This is exactly what I did in January. Darwin is Australia’s only tropical city – during May the evenings are typically balmy and the days warm and sunny.

We’ll be spending time in one of the most underrated landscapes in Australia – the Northern Territory’s Victoria River District – with towering sandstone escarpments and livistona ‘fan’ palms.
…overnight beside the vast expanse of Lake Argyle, Australia’s largest irrigation dam, with an inflow rate second only to that of the Amazon…
Lake Argyle is a RAMSAR site due to the amount of wildlife, which includes an estimated 30,000 freshwater crocodiles. It’s a spectacular sight so we’re staying overnight here.
… to the farming oasis of Kununurra, in Western Australia’s East Kimberley region.

This tour has something for everyone – spectacular landscapes, remote area solitude, a huge variety of native wildlife – and a lot of fun. (Lake Argyle, mobile phone image – more than 20m deep here, wasn’t going to risk dropping my heavier cameras, I needed one free hand to swim back to the boat!)
