At the end of a long day I’m sitting peacefully watching government-funded SBS telly at peak hour (around 7.30pm) and up pops this ad showing a pie chart, with the top third taken up by cows. We are exhorted to ‘go green, go veg, save the planet’, because methane produced by livestock is causing global […]

March 16th, 2009PETA – at it again
February 7th, 2009PETA are said to want to ban guide dogs for the blind, and they have seized the opportunity to push for a ban on all horse-drawn carriages in Vienna, after a drunken driver caused an accident. I wonder, do PETA members squash flies, let ants and spiders invade their houses, and let ticks, fleas and […]
Australian Camels – Ships of the Desert
October 6th, 2008Camels played a vital part in opening up the arid regions of central Australia. They were used by early explorers to safely traverse arid inland regions, and later used to carry goods for sale to remote residents by Afghan cameleers. The camels found in Australia are the single-humped ‘dromedaries’ (camelus dromedarius). Camels are very practical […]
Evicting cattle from the High Country
August 26th, 2008Eradicating introduced species of animals and plants entirely from National Parks – and all other publicly owned land, including Travelling Stock Routes – is a great theory. These areas belong to all future Australians, so everything possible should be done to ensure that they are kept in as good a condition as possible, for future […]
People for the Eating of Tasty Animals
August 5th, 2008I don’t know how I missed it for this long, but I only recently stumbled upon P.E.T.A. – People for the Eating of Tasty Animals. There are t-shirts, mugs, keyrings and stickers, etc. Well done Mike Doughney, for standing up for free speech in the face of abusive bullying. Check out his excellent website http://www.mtd.com/tasty/ […]
Outback Australia – Climate & Landscape
October 11th, 2007The Australian outback landscape ranges from vast, naturally treeless blacksoil plains growing Flinders and Mitchell grasses (referred to as ‘downs’ country), to rocky hills covered in spinifex, ghostgums and coolamon trees, to dense grey mulga scrub, red sandhill country, lignum and coolabah swampy channel country, to dusty nondescript scrub of bullwaddy, lancewood, gidyea or eucalypts […]
U.N. Declaration on Animal Welfare Predicted
August 23rd, 2007Hugh Wirth is at it again, pretending to be a moderate voice of animal welfare when in reality he sounds more like a fully paid up member of an animal right extremist organisation. As anyone would know who has heard him pontificating on ABC radio in Victoria, in recent years. He was interviewed by ABC […]
S.A. Bans animals under 200kg from participating in rodeos
July 30th, 2007The S.A. Minister for all sorts of things including mental health, is going to give the RSPCA more than half a million dollars for a couple more inspectors, and has banned animals under 200kg from participating in rodeos. This means no more calf roping or bronco branding in South Australia. Gail Gago’s press release: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/animalwelfare/pdfs/rodeo_news_release_4july2007.pdf […]
The Australian Beef Industry
April 21st, 2007The domestication of cattle began thousands of years ago well before the birth of Christ. Perhaps it was around the same time that horses were domesticated, or not long after. Today’s Bos Taurus (European breeds) and Bos Indicus (Zebu – originating in India) are descended from their extinct European forebears the Bos Primigenius (Aurochs). The […]
