July 21st, 2009

Just discovered Plough Book Sales, a Victorian online mail-order business that specialises in books on tractors, old engines, earthmoving equipment, steam engines and metal working. The sort of specialist books you’ll never find on A & R or Dymocks shelves. Plough Book Sales also has a list of interesting links to related topics and book […]

Sandy Thorne – bush story teller, poet, entertainer & public speaker

July 19th, 2009

For the first 7 months of this year I’ve been trapped in the office tackling mountains of administration every day (that’s literally every day, not public-service ‘every day’; i.e. it has been the best part of 7 days a week, including public holidays; except for a couple of days over Easter and a trip away […]

Careers in the aviation industry

July 13th, 2009

I have come across quite a few low-hours fixed wing pilots when roaming around the country side. Young blokes (it’s more than 99% blokes) from cities who’ve ended up in the bush flying fixed-wing aircraft, usually single-engine Cessnas; doing fence and bore runs, store runs, and ferry work etc on cattle stations. These pilots are […]

‘Only in South Africa’ – 3 stolen cattle in a Toyota sedan

July 6th, 2009

Last year I was sent some photographs titled ‘Only in South Africa’, showing three brahmans that were tied up and squashed into the back of a stolen car, which is apparently the South African model equivalent of a Toyota Corolla hatchback. I just discovered it on YouTube; well worth a look (and a laugh), if […]

Australian Cattle Dogs & Sheep Dogs, Dingoes & Pigdogs

July 1st, 2009

Most dogs that work with sheep and cattle in Australia are either kelpies or border collies.  And to a lesser extent, with cattle – blue or red heelers (also known as ‘Queensland heelers’ or ‘Australian cattle dogs’). Australian kelpies are black and tan, short-haired, bouncy dogs that will usually wag their tails when you rouse on […]

Tipperary Station, NT, may be purchased by Brockstar

June 29th, 2009

Tipperary Station is currently being assessed by an American company, Brockstar. Brockstar specialises in ‘private portfolio management of capital investments’, with their primary interest apparently being in urban development projects in America. So if Brockstar buys the Tipperary Group of Stations from QC Alan Myers, it’s a safe bet that they’ll only own it for […]

Chopper mustering pilot accident on Rutland Plains Station

June 27th, 2009

A mustering chopper pilot was struck by the rotor blade of his R22 on Rutland Plains in mid June, and unfortunately he died at the scene. Apparently he was only in his 20s. Most of these helicopter accidents involve tail rotors, but apparently in this instance it was the overhead rotor. Rutland Plains cattle station […]

AACo, IFFCo and Felda

June 21st, 2009

So much for wishing for a peaceful future after the recent AACo board upheaval. Does the drama ever end? And should Australians be concerned? Australia is the largest exporter of red meat in the world and the largest exporter of beef, in value terms. (Second, in volume terms, to Brazil.) Increasing world food shortages are […]
